1. Today's Motivation
Know Your Purpose In Your Life
"A man or woman should conceive of a legitimate
purpose in his heart, and set out to accomplish it.
He should make this purpose the centralising
point of his thoughts.
It may take the form of a spiritual ideal,
or it may be a worldly object,
according to his nature at the time being;
but whichever it is, he should steadily focus his thought
forces upon the object which he has set before him.
He should make this purpose his supreme duty,
and should devote himself to its attainment,
not allowing his thoughts to wander away into
ephemeral fancies, longings, and imaginings.
This is the royal road to self-control
and true concentration of thought.
Even if he fails again and again to accomplish
his purpose (as he necessarily must until weakness
is overcome), the strength of character gained
will be the measure of his true success,
and this will form a new starting point for
future power and triumph."

Hi Friends
Welcome to the new Australian Monthly Newsletter. Well, it's not
really new, just that it will only come to your mailbox once a month
instead of every week. No I haven't got lazy! Older maybe? I will
explain again. Ken Envoy of Site Build It has convinced me that my
time in the future will be best engaged in doing what I like to do
and working out how to profit from that. So in the next six months
I will be working through his 10 day program to build a web site
and monetize it. We use the program outlined in the link below, it
costs $299.00 USD per year and includes hosting. Here it is if your
interested in making a good income on the net, long term, doing what
you like most.
http://workfromhome.sitesell.com/maleysmarket.html
Over here in Western Australia we are in the middle of winter and
have had good rains in the agricultural areas. Mining inland
is proceeding well and our city is growing in leaps and bounds.
(last weekend I went down to Perth and the traffic
there and in Mandurah has grown so much :-( ) Even here in downtown
Geraldton it is hard to find a parking place.
But, like you guys, everyone is concerned with the price of fuel.
Diesel has reached $2.00 a litre in some places! About $9.00 a
gallon in the old measurement. I read yesterday on the Forex wires
that General Motors in USA is likely to go bankrupt!
So anything to do with industry and transport are looking for relief
from that huge jump in oil.
We had a serious explosion in a natural gas conversion utility in
an off-shore island that supplies the state and that is causing
extra costs till its fixed.
This brings us to the word INFLATION, I used capital letters as you
will have experienced what I mean. I read James Rueff's definition
of inflation as " a policy which subsidies expenditure that gives
no returns being financed with money that does not exist"
Trying to simplify this; in the boom 2002/2006 central banks lent
money (money that did not exist in real terms) to people, mainly
to buy houses, thereby rapidly increasing personal debt that went
into default on a large scale. Banks then failed and were rescued
by taxpayers money from the government!
Bit like in a household that borrows too much on their credit cards
to buy things and then they lose their job and can't sell their
stuff!
This caused the US to lower interest rates as their deficit climbed.
Foreign governments ( China etc ) used borrowed USD dollars changed
to their currency to pay for ore from Australia etc. You get what I
mean? Then these countries have a huge surplus of USD dollars on
hand and still have because the USD dollar value fell. That's where
we are at right now.
The USD dollar will most likely rise in value against those
currencies in the not to distant future, which can cause serious
monetary problems on a world scale. The most immediate effect would
be a fall in inflation. Maybe even a massive slowdown in worldwide
economic growth lasting through till late 2009 or beyond?
But on the other hand *grin* Israel are planning on an attack on Iran
so that should keep the wheels of industry turning, especially with
the seventh fleet hanging around the Persian gulf?
*footnote* The commercial banks are now tight-lipped and trembling
when one comes in to borrow money these days!!!
Ah well, the sun is shining here today, birds are singing in the
trees, my children are all well and happy. We are indeed blessed!
Till next month....kind regards.

CROSSING THE
LINE – A BOOK’S GENESIS
©
Dianne
Bates www.enterprisingwords.com
Where did your book’s idea come from? Who is the protagonist based on? How was the plot developed? People ask authors questions like this. When a manuscript was re-drafted many times and it’s taken years to find a publisher willing to invest in it, it’s sometimes difficult to find answers.
Such is the case with my 100th published book, a YA novel, Crossing the Line (Ford Street Publishing, distributed by
Macmillan). Described by fellow authors as ‘nail-biting,’ ‘engrossing’ and ‘profoundly sensitive’, the book is likely to garner a following as it is about a teenage girl who self-harms.
So what does a 60-year-old author know about self-harm which seems to be so prevalent now among teenagers, especially girls? And what of life in a psychiatric hospital unit? And obsession, for that – all of which feature in Crossing the Line?
As a teenager I self-harmed. Why, you ask? Why does anyone with a modicum of intelligence cut themselves? There are probably as many theories as there are girls who cut, but on reflection I think that self-harming results in physical pain which in turn relieves mental turmoil. I was a deeply unhappy child. I didn’t tell anyone I was self cutting, but secretly I hoped someone would find out and ask why, and then I would be able to divulge the reasons for my depression.
In my late teens I was admitted to a psychiatric hospital, and more recently I’ve been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. So it is that I have an understanding of mental illness, and empathy for those who suffer from it. And too, I am well aware of patient-therapist transference, a kind of ‘love’ that therapy creates when a patient is revealing the deepest parts of herself and her life.
Sophie, the 17-year-old protagonist in Crossing the Line has been abandoned often and cuts when stressed. She is put her under the care of a psychiatrist in an adolescent hospital unit. It is this doctor who crosses the patient-therapist line and whom
Sophie grows to ‘love’ and to stalk when she is eventually released back to the care of her housemates.
Much of Crossing the Line is fictional, but obviously I have drawn on aspects of my own life. Doing so makes me feel vulnerable. But at the same time I am looking forward to being able to talk to young people about how to cope with dangerous feelings.

7. A little humour.
Chicken surprise
A couple go for a meal at a Chinese restaurant and order the
"Chicken Surprise."
The waiter brings the meal, served in a lidded cast iron pot.
Just as the wife is about to serve herself, the lid of the
pot rises slightly and she briefly sees two beady little eyes
looking around before the lid slams back down.
"Good grief, did you see that?" she asks her husband.
He hasn't, so she asks him to look in the pot.
He reaches for it and again the lid rises, and he sees two
little eyes looking around before it slams down.
Rather perturbed, he calls the waiter over, explains what is
happening, and demands an explanation.
"Please sir," says the waiter, "what you order?"
The husband replies, "Chicken Surprise."
"Ah! So solly," says the waiter, "I bring you Peeking Duck!"
